A book on the opera house in Aix-en-Provence
The French edition of the book devoted to the opera house in Aix-en-Provence, Gregotti Associati. Grand Théâtre de Provence, has been published by Skira Flammarion.
Inaugurated on 29 June 2007 with the prestigious Berliner Philharmoniker Orchestra, the opera theatre staked its claim immediately as the new symbol of the Provençale city. For Aix-en-Provence the new structure, destined in particular to host the calendar of classical music and opera events, also fits into in a more ambitious operation of urban transformation and cultural policy. Included in the new Sextius-Mirabeau district, around the theatre is a large cultural forum connecting the Cité du Livre, the Centre Choréographique National du Ballet Preljocaj and the Pavillon Noir.
With an extensive apparatus of illustrations, the book now published presents the history of the project from various perspectives: political, urban planning, architectural and technical. In addition to an introduction by the President of the Communauté du Pays d’Aix, Maryse Joissains Masini, the volume also contains texts by Henri Westphal, interviewed by Karen Nielsen, Vittorio Gregotti, Oriol Bohigas, Jean-Louis Cohen, and Paoloemilio Colao with Hélène Miroux, Daniel Commins, Pierre Sablayrolles and Ginette Caron.
The book is also accompanied by a DVD of the film directed by Jean-Michel Vecchiet, La naissance du Grand Théâtre de Provence, which looks back over the story of the construction of the new theatre, devoting particular attention to its public, musical and design protagonists.
